Today's fortune: March 10, 2011

Seek out the significance of your problem at this time. Try to understand.

As we speak, Jamie is trying to seek out not the significance but the answer to numerous problems in her algebra class. She's been struggling with this class quite a bit, and I'm no help at all. I am terrible at math, especially the advanced stuff. Listen up, kids! You don't need to learn math to be a blogger! And if you read most blogs out there, you don't need to know spelling and grammar either!

It's easy to grasp the meaning of this fortune, but I've been wondering how it applies to me. I can think of numerous problems in my life, but which one is this post driving at?

To help me focus, I Googled the word "problem." That was a bad idea. Some of the phrases that popped up were:

Snoring problem. I never hear myself snore, but I've heard reports from others, including Jamie, and, yeah, this is a problem for me.

Problem child. I was probably one of those, too, but I was a saint compared to my brother.

99 Problems. But a bitch ain't one.

National Problem Gambling Awareness Week. Why, it's actually this week! I'll be sure not to gamble until Sunday.

So... that's really no help.

I turned to my good friend K3 at work today. She was one of my trainers, and I asked her if she could point out any problems in my widget-making strategies she saw in training.

"Honestly?" she asked.

Let me stop here for a second. When you ask someone to expose one of your flaws, and she replies "Honestly?" - prepare yourself for a doozy.

"Of course," I replied.

"I would say that you tend to let your emotions get the best of you sometimes," K3 said. "You kind of wear your heart on your sleeve."

After I stopped crying, I pondered K3's words. I think she's absolutely right, not only in the framework of a widget maker, but in general. I do wear my heart on my sleeve. I'm easily hurt and insulted. And I'm sure I've lost friends over it.

Today's fortune says I'm supposed to seek out the significance of the problem. Being overly sensitive slows me down in the widget process. My workload is increasing every week, and I need to step up the pace.

The fortune also says, "Try to understand." So I'm coming to terms with this problem.

But the fortune does not say, "Solve the problem," or "You will find a solution." Does that mean I should continue to wear my heart on my sleeve?

I don't know if I really have a choice. Those of us who wear our hearts on our sleeves know you can't exactly shove that bastard in your pocket when the going gets tough. It's surgically attached, and it's not going anywhere.

Instead, I will continue to pursue the significance of the problem and I will try to understand. Through knowledge comes solutions, and perhaps even a way to turn my weakness into an advantage.
