Today's fortune: July 22, 2011

Today's fortune: A romantic mystery will soon add interest to your life.

Well played, fortune. This one was fun.

For single people and for married sleazebags, this fortune could mean any number of things. Maybe you have a secret admirer. Maybe you will meet a mysterious stranger. Maybe an old flame will re-ignite.

But for old, monogamous married folk like Jamie and I (eight years this fall!), this fortune is a bit trickier.

I could interpret this message as something sexual, but this is a family blog (for the most part) and I'll let your minds be dirty on their own. Besides, I want to leave something for David Crowe's "In Bed" feature at the end of the month. I'm going to keep this clean.

The first thing I did after reading the fortune was Google the phrase "romantic mystery." I discovered that's a genre of fiction, but I also found a link to an online game called "Romantic Mystery." It's an "escape game," and if you've never played one, they're freakin' addictive.

I left the game up on my computer. Before I walked out the door for work, I gently woke up Jamie, kissed her on the lips and told her to go to my office when she got out of bed.

At work I received a text message from Jamie letting me know she had defeated the game. One romantic mystery down.

On the way home from work I stopped and purchased a half-dozen red roses. There's not much mystery here. She's going to know I bought them for her. But a fortune that mentions romance certainly calls for flowers. Jamie deserves them every single day, and I don't buy them enough.

Funny thing about those roses, though. They make for a pretty good decoy. And every good mystery - romantic or otherwise - needs a decoy.

You see, I also purchased Jamie another romantic gift. It is now hidden inside our house.

If she wants it, she's going to have to solve the mystery and find it.

I wish her good fortune in her search.
