Today's fortune: August 16, 2011

Today's fortune: Your love of life can carry you through any circumstance.

This fortune just makes good common sense. The secret to loving life is finding things to love. And if you have things to love, those difficult circumstances become a whole lot easier to deal with.

Let me tell you about some of the things I love, in no particular order, except the first one, which is truly first.

1. Of course, my wife, Jamie. She's the reason I live and the thing that gets me through all circumstances.

2. Clocking out. I was speaking to my friend Aron at work just today. Around five o'clock, I heard the sound that indicated he was clocking out. I looked over and he sighed, and said, "There's nothing like clocking out." I concur. It's a great feeling, and I took extra joy in appreciating it today. When I left the office the air was surprisingly cool and the sun felt good on my skin after being cooped up in a cubicle all day.

3. Inventing something new. On Sunday night, I got a hankerin' to grill something. What I decided to do was make grill fajitas. I cut up some steak, onions and peppers into big old chunks and marinated them in a nice spicy concoction. Then I skewered everything, grilled it up and served it with tortillas, cheese, sour cream and salsa. They were magnificent.

4. Looking forward to leftover fajitas for dinner tonight.

5. The teaser trailer for The Avengers. Looks AMAZING!

6. Selecting a book to read. Jamie makes fun of me for this... but when I near the end of a book, I begin the process of selecting a new one to read. It's quite an ordeal. In fact, I did it last night when drawing near to the end of The Upright Man, a great thriller by Michael Marshall. I sat down in my study, and next to my chair is one shelf dedicated to books I've been wanting to read. I pulled out a few, in addition to others from elsewhere on the shelf, and I flipped through them, reading the first few sentences of each. Finally I narrowed it down to two finalists before settling on Letters From the Earth by Mark Twain. Jamie says I go through this rigamarole because I don't want to be without a book to read, even for a second. That's partly true, but I also love the excitement of starting a book anew.

7. Finally, gloriously, there's music, deep, meaningful music.
