Today's fortune: August 17, 2011

Today's fortune: Relax and enjoy yourself.

There's an easy answer to this fortune, and I'll discuss that first. The more difficult and challenging answer... well, we'll come to that soon enough.

I had the perfect opportunity to both relax and enjoy myself this evening. My old college professor and writing partner John held a a picnic for alums of the Park University school newspaper, the Stylus. The event was tonight at the university. It was great to see John and spend time with people who served on the newspaper throughout different eras. I enjoyed myself quite thoroughly.

Now to the hard part.

My throat is absolutely killing me right now. In my job as a widget maker, I'm required to talk to people on the phone pretty much all day long. I come home with a headache and a sore throat most days, but today my voice is really raw. I've been sucking on cough drops, and that helps with the pain, but I don't like this feeling at all.

My voice needs a chance to relax. And really, that could lead to a fair amount of enjoyment. The most beautiful moments in this world are silent; if not silent, they're certainly not filled with our own chatter.

So with a weekend coming up, I'm going to take an opportunity to rest my voice. Although I'll still be writing on this blog every day, I am taking a temporary vow of silence. For forty-eight hours - from midnight Saturday morning to midnight Sunday night - I'm not going to say a word.

I know it will be difficult, not just because I'm a chatterbox, but also because I'm afraid I'll forget, or I'll stub my toe and curse a blue streak. But the silence will be good for my voice. And it will be good for my soul.

I'm actually looking forward to this.
