Today's fortune: October 10, 2011

Today's fortune: At 20 years of age the will reigns; at 30 the wit; at 40 the judgment.

My age is no secret. I'm 32, which places me closest to the second grouping of this fortune. Is my wit reigning? It would be vain of me to say so... but I do think I'm as witty now as I've ever been. This fortune is implying that I'll be less witty by the time I'm forty, or maybe just implying that my wit will be surpassed by my judgment.

I can't really speak to my 40s yet, so I don't know if I'll have better judgment than I do now. I'm guessing I will. I'm not too old to remember my early 20s, and at first glance I thought I agreed with this fortune. I was experiencing a new level of freedom. I could hop in my truck and take a drive whenever I wanted. I had my own job and my own money to spend. When I found the girl I loved, I married her quickly.

But those years are about a decade distant now. So to get a fresh perspective on the subject, I asked my reliable friend Quincy, who is in her early twenties. Surprisingly, Quincy disagreed with the fortune - even though I warned her that was a bad idea - and what she had to say was profound.

"It sounds to me like the fortune is saying the will or intent of a person prevails in their 20s," Quincy said. "I don't think that's true. In your 20s, your mind changes like you change your undergarments. That means your intent, or your will, changes as well."

Hmmm. So maybe it's not the will that reigns, but the right of a person to change his or her will that reigns in your twenties.

For me, that part of the fortune is moot. I'm going to focus on fine-tuning my wit and preparing my judgment for the days ahead.

CARROT UPDATE

Over the weekend, Jamie and I grilled up a nice fall selection of veggies in tinfoil, including potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, butternut squash and, yes, carrots. This was probably the best batch of mixed veggies I've ever had.
