Today's fortune: November 12, 2011

Today's fortune: Drink to your health.

Well, this has to be my wife's favorite fortune of all time.

Jamie and I actually drank to our healths last night, with the help of a friend, D'Erin, who came over for dinner and a movie. We still had some leftover cake-flavored vodka from Jamie's birthday, and D'Erin brought strawberry soda to mix with it. Tasted like strawberry shortcake. The drink was girly as hell, but it went down smooooooth.

Of course, drinking too much can lead to the opposite of health, as I've learned over the course of the first 100 pages of the new (old) novel I'm reading, Raymond Chandler's "The Long Goodbye." In the novel, Philip Marlowe helps a drunk find salvation (ultimately a failed effort) and also relives memories of his own drunken past. (The novel is terrific, by the way.)

But if you don't let it become a problem, drinking a little bit here and there can be a lot of fun. And it actually can be healthy. So tip 'em back, folks - in moderation. Jamie and I will be clinking glasses together later tonight.
