Today's fortune: November 18, 2011

Today's fortune: The world is always ready to receive talent with open arms.

I like this fortune. If you have talent, and as long as you're given opportunity, you will have a chance to succeed with that talent, and the world will gladly receive you. It's that opportunity thing that, sadly, keeps a lot of talented people off the world's radar.

As a writer, opportunity is sometimes hard to come by. There's an old adage in the publishing world that it's easier to get a book published if you're already a published author. If you haven't been published, the challenge is immensely more difficult. That is of course a Catch-22 which many writer, including very good writers, can never solve.

In my own life, my talents are being recognized at work, and I feel like I'm on the verge of making a leap there. Promotion may be a year or more away, but I'm succeeding in ways that make my superiors happy, and that's good for my career as a widget maker and for my future development. Today I sat down with my supervisor for a quarterly performance review, and the review was two thumbs up. Performance reviews can go one of two ways, and you can always tell how it went by how you feel when you walk out of it. I felt elated.

The course of my career at Acme is a little more realistically paved now. After I climb to the next salary level in a few months (or at least attempt to), there's a good chance I could be on target to go through the company's leadership program.

There have been times, even quite recently, when I thought I wasn't worth a damn as a widget maker. But now I know I do have talent, and I know my employer recognizes that. It's a good feeling, to see your talents are making a difference.
