Today's fortune: You are going to have a very comfortable old age.
A few months ago, I asked readers a poll question about fate: "If you knew it would come true, which fortune would you most like to receive?" The answers ranged from "You will die at the age of 70 as a billionaire" to "you will live to be 100 but will die broke" (to my surprise, the winning answer was, "Your fate will not be decided by a fortune cookie").
Today's fortune could have fit easily in among the choices... and I wouldn't be surprised at all if it was the most popular answer. Hell, I'd probably vote for it myself. I can't think of a more wonderful gift to receive than the knowledge that this fortune would come true.
I asked my wife - fresh off her second 30th birthday - what she thought this fortune meant for us. Her answer is so perfect, and so exactly the future I wish for us, that I'm going to let her words dominate the rest of this post.
"Of course, we'll be living in a beautiful cabin in the Smoky Mountains," she said. "You'll be a famous writer, and you'll crank out a new novel every six months or a year."
"Woah," I said. "A new novel every year? That doesn't sound very relaxing or comfortable."
"Yeah, but you'll be so good at it by then, it'll be easy for you. And I'll be a florist and a pastry chef. We'll have kids and grandkids, and our family will be very close to us.
"And, above all, we'll be very happy."
Sounds good to me.
