Today's fortune: January 8, 2011

Today's fortune: It's time to treat yourself to something special.

This is my favorite fortune of all so far. And accordingly, I've been treating myself all day.

When I bought my weeks' worth of lottery tickets this afternoon, I purchased a fountain drink, something I love, and something I used to do quite frequently, but I've stopped recently to save money. I started reading a book today that I've really been looking forward to, "The Lost City of Z" by David Grann. Currently, Jamie and I are waiting for pizza to be delivered. We'll enjoy it while watching a DVD. Perhaps a glass or two of wine will be involved.

But I did something else today that was a little more productive, but no less a treat for myself. In my training class at work, we're required to do a "class project." For our project, we've chosen to help out a wonderful local organization called TLC, which provides "an emergency shelter for abused and neglected children from infancy through age 18."

This morning, our training class visited the TLC campus in Olathe, Kansas, and spent some time with the children. Mostly, we played board games. I remembered that I love CLUE, and I have an affinity for an addictive little game called Zingo.

What surprised me most was how polite and engaging these children were. All of them were approachable and fun to be around. Considering what they've had to face in their short lives, I think that's remarkable.

The kids love it when they have visitors. I told Jamie about it, and we've promised to go together. You should go sometime, too. You'll get more out of it than you can imagine.

Even though the fortune told me to treat myself to "something special," I don't plan on making any extravagant purchases. Besides, my budget is tapped out from the hell-on-earth that was last night's tattoo.

The biggest treat for me is yet to come - spending an evening at home with my beautiful wife.

And tomorrow, as my hometown Kansas City Chiefs face the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the NFL playoffs, maybe I'll be treated to a KC victory.
