Today's fortune: February 10, 2011

Today's fortune: You will receive unexpected support over the next week. Accept it graciously.

This is going to be a sad post, and for that I am sorry. But I am hopeful the story will have a happy ending.

Jamie and I have made a very difficult decision. We are not going to keep the stray dog she found a couple weeks ago.

The dog, whom we've been calling Cookie, is not more than Jamie and I can handle, but he's definitely more than our cats are able to tolerate. That is the No. 1 reason we have to say goodbye to the little fella. But I would be lying if I said there weren't other, more selfish, reasons, too.

The bottom line is, the timing is just not right. Jamie and I have not grown attached to Cookie the way a good dog owner should. And because of that, I'm afraid we won't provide him the good home he deserves.

Fortunately, shih tzu mixes are extremely popular dogs. And that's where today's fortune comes into play. Through the help of the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City and my friend Katie at work, we have several promising leads for a new owner. In fact, I have a "play date" scheduled this weekend for a woman who already has a shih tzu, wants another one and wants to make sure her dog and Cookie get along.

Finding Cookie in the first place was quite unexpected, and the support we're receiving is equally surprising. We're trying to accept that support as graciously as possible, and Cookie's new owner will receive all the support he or she needs from us.

Wait. I have to stop calling him Cookie. That's not his name. He's not our dog. I'm so glad he came into our lives for a short time. But we're not able to provide a lifelong home.

Someone who can provide that is out there. And I think we're close to finding that person and building a new family.
