Today's fortune: March 1, 2011

Today's fortune: Be prepared to receive something special with no strings attached.

Here's a fun fact: when you Google the phrase "no strings attached," you have a hard time finding information about the phrase itself for all the articles and videos about the godawful-looking Ashton Kutcher-Natalie Portman movie and an old album by 'N Sync.

That one guy kinda looks like Justin Timberlake.

It's funny that I had difficulty finding anything on the phrase itself (and I admit I didn't look that hard), because I don't believe it's possible to have an interaction with another human without strings being attached in one way or another. Even if those strings are no thicker than spider silk, they still exist.

Basically, what I'm saying is every action we take has some kind of motive behind it. Not to sound like a cynic, but even if we do things "out of the goodness of our hearts," we're doing it in part because it makes our hearts feel good.

Of course, the anonymous writer of this fortune probably didn't intend for some schlub from Kansas to rip apart the theory behind his or her words.

So allow me to share with you an actual, honest-to-goodness "something special" I received today with as few strings attached as humanly possible.

I received a note from a co-worker who reads this blog. The note was labeled "special advice from a special friend." This was the message:

"I think you are doing a fantastic job at (Acme Corp.) and if you keep it up, you could really go places."

That was nice to hear, just a little over a month out of training. It helped get me through the day.

I guess the lesson I learned is, the strings are often irrelevant. If an action by somebody else makes you feel better, then hey, who am I to argue with that? Life's too short to quibble.

Check back in tomorrow, when I quibble over the next fortune!

  1. Amen!
    Paul Simon put it well with the line, "Who am I to blow against the wind?"

    Btw, how has your "obstacle free" week been going? Do we get an update, or do we just have to wait until the week is over? "An enquiring mind wants to know!" :}
