Today's fortune: March 11, 2011

Today's fortune: Someone is speaking well of you.

This has been a good day, and early on the fortune came true.

Here at Acme Co., employees often receive recognition for their hard work. When I first interviewed for the job of widget maker and I got my first peek of the widget floor, I noticed hundreds of gold-foil balloons everywhere. "Did you guys have a party?" I asked my escort for the day. "Oh, no," she laughed. "People are given balloons for certain accomplishments."

After my first month on the floor, I saw the managers walking around the office with a gigantic bundle of balloons, handing them out to deserving employees. They passed by my desk without a word.

Today, they stopped. And my manager handed me two shiny gold balloons.

"Matt, you've been doing an amazing job," he said, offering a handshake. "You're in the top 10 of the department in widget-making speed and in customer service."

Another manager nodded his approval and said, "You've been knocking it out of the park."

It's nice to be recognized, and it's even nicer to hear such nice words from important people at the company. I think I'm making a positive impression here, and Acme doesn't let hard work go unnoticed.

And the balloons are addictive. I want more and more; I don't ever want my cube to be lacking a large floating gold star from now on.

I'm writing this post early today, during a break at work, because Jamie and I are going out to celebrate tonight.
