Today's fortune: March 30, 2011

Today's fortune: When one door closes, another will open.

Yesterday was a pretty crappy day at work. Today made yesterday look like Christmas, or a cakewalk, or some kinda crazy Christmas day cakewalk.

But first, a funny story. Well, I think it's funny; with the way my day is going, you'll probably think it's the stupidest story imaginable. And, yeah, it's pretty stupid. Still, funny.

As I drove to work this morning, I passed an SUV with a specialized license plate that said 4PAWZ. "An animal lover," I thought, looking over at the driver. "Good think that plate's already taken, or Jamie would want it for her car."

Seconds after I passed the animal lover, directly ahead of me I saw this specialized license plate on different car: "4PIR8S." For those of you who are license-plate-interpretation-challenged, that's "For Pirates." Argh.

Besides a "Pirates of the Caribbean" sticker in the rear window, the driver was a reasonable-looking woman who, apparently, was enough of a fan of pirates that she insisted her car's license plates expressed her love. I'm assuming she's talking about these pirates...

...and not these pirates:

Anyway, I thought it was strange to see two such similar license plates on the same highway within a few seconds of one another. I guess the odds aren't astronomical, but still.

And yes, the entire morning I thought about how to turn today's fortune into "When one 4 closes, another 4 opens."

We're stuck, however, with the age-old doors saying. It's also been put like this: "When God closes a door, He opens a window."

I definitely know which door has closed: it's the door where I'm a good widget maker who does not feel overwhelmed, has time to help those around him and enjoys going to work every day.

Perhaps I'm being a little bit over-dramatic. This is two bad days. It's bound to get better. Right now, though, it feels like there's no light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm still looking for an opening door. Unfortunately, this fortune doesn't give a timeline. I'll just have to wait and see.
