I don't think this counts, because it happened last night before I opened today's fortune.
My wife and I were watching "The Killing," a great new series on AMC. (Funny story: yesterday I was at a restaurant, waiting for my food, and I called Jamie. We chatted for a while and then I said, "Oh, and don't forget, we've got the killing tonight." A gentleman standing a few feet to my right shot me an odd look and backed slowly away.)
Jamie was surfing the Internet on her laptop as we watched, and when the show was over and the end credits were rolling, she said, "Turn it to CNN. They're saying Osama Bin Laden is dead."
As everyone in the world knows by now, Jamie was telling the truth. It was in incredibly earth-shaking surprise. And Jamie, even though she is my wife, also happenst to be my best friend. And I've known her for 10 years, which qualifies as "long time."
But then there's that thing about how it happened before I opened today's fortune.
So at work today I kept my eyes open for signs. Before long I received an e-mail that was just the ticket.
At Acme Co., supervisors and employees can recognize their co-workers through an online e-card program. It's kinda cheesy, but I know when I receive an e-mail saying "You've just been recognized!" my day gets instantly better.
I clicked on the e-mail, and I found out I had been recognized by one of the very first people I formed a friendship with at Acme, my old trainer Katie. She just finished training a new widget making class, and she sent me an e-card to say thanks for visiting the class and helping out on a few occasions.
"Thank you for coming into the training class," the e-card said. "I specifically noticed you and the help you provided the class, and I truly appreciate it. Training new hires would be impossible without the help from individuals like you."
GREEN WEEK: DAY 2
This one is pretty simple: I rented the Matt Damon movie "Green Zone" from the Acme Company Store.
And on a day of jubilation, when the nation and the world is celebrating the end of Osama Bin Laden, allow me to share this cover of "We Are the Champions" by Green Day.
