Today's fortune: June 23, 2011

Today's fortune: Be alert for new opportunities - pleasure or business.

The business opportunity came easy today. Earlier in the week the widget makers were given the opportunity to work overtime. They throw it out there once in a blue moon when widget inventory is high to help everybody get caught up. Starting today I took full advantage of this opportunity, working from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Not only will I get a little more caught up, I will make some additional scratch. Jamie and I are still on financial lockdown, and any extra buck we can place our hands on is helpful right now.

That brings me to some pleasurable opportunities. One of the greatest pleasures in my life is food. The fact that I'm plus-sized is proof of that. It's easy to get a great meal when you're not on lockdown, but Jamie and I have learned quickly how to eat well on a dime.

Actually, tonight my dinner cost eight dimes and a nickel.

Yesterday I did a little grocery shopping, and one of the things I picked up was an eighty-five cent Banquet Salisbury steak dinner. I didn't think it would be very good, but hey, it was eighty-five cents. How can you beat that price?

Not until I opened the box to microwave the dinner did I notice what the "steak" was made of:

The FDA should make them spell it "stake."

After the timer dinged I removed the plastic film from the meal, sliced off a hunk of "steak" and shoved it into my grimacing face. And...

It was pretty damn good.

Surprisingly good. The "steak" was tasty and tender, and covered in gravy that complemented the mashed potatoes well. The side of corn was a nice touch, and it didn't taste particularly un-fresh.

This was a good meal. And it makes my wallet (as well as my tummy) very happy. I'm going to stock up.

New opportunities also bring about change. One major change for the purposes of this project is that I've nearly run out of cookies in my second batch.

The first box of cookies lasted me about a hundred days; even though there were 350 cookies in the box, I kept running into duplicates. The second batch - which also contained 350 cookies - lasted only about seventy days.

This week I purchased Batch 3, at a Pei Wei Asian Diner in Overland Park, Kansas. The brand they carried was Golden Bowl, and the cost for a box of 350 was fifteen bucks.

I should run out of Shang Pin cookies in the next couple days. At that point, I'll switch over to Golden Bowl.

(Side note: For yesterday's fortune, I created a romantic mystery for Jamie. I embedded a clue to the location of her romantic gift inside yesterday's post by writing "I wish her good fortune in her search." With a little prompting, Jamie figured out the clue: the gift - a pair of gourmet chocolate bars - was buried inside the new batch of fortune cookies.)
