Today's fortune: July 23, 2011

Today's fortune: No need to worry! You will always have everything that you need.

Boy, talk about opening exactly the right fortune at precisely the right time.

During our recent financial woes, this fortune is just what Jamie and I needed to hear. Money is tight right now, but you know what? There's no need to worry. Everything's gonna be fine.

We've both been thinking about peach crates a lot lately. A long time ago, when Jamie and I were facing another time of financial hardship, this image came to us of people using peach crates as furniture because they couldn't afford real furniture, or they had to sell off their real furniture, or something like that. Neither one of us can remember if the idea came from a movie or an old TV show, or if it's one of the things we invented together whispering to each other in the dark, in the middle of the night, one of those moments when nobody else in the world exists.

Doesn't matter, really, where it came from, but the peach crates image still exists in our mind. And we use that image as a way to tell each other that everything's going to be okay. "Even if we have to sit on peach crates," one of us will say, "as long as we have each other we'll be just fine."

Now, Jamie and I don't even have to say the whole thing. We can just look into each other's eyes and whisper the words "peach crates," and we just know we'll pull through even the toughest times.

This morning, after sleeping in, Jamie and I cleaned up the kitchen and made breakfast together: biscuits and gravy and fried potatoes and scrambled eggs. It was a cheap, simple and wonderful meal, and it filled our bellies and warmed our hearts. We ate with silly smiles on our faces, because the food was terrific and we knew we would always have everything we would need.
