Today's fortune: August 9, 2011

Today's fortune: There will be many surprises: unexpected gains are likely.

In surprising a co-worker today, I almost made a significant unexpected gain.

Last week, my good friend Ty won an award from Acme Co. for superior customer service. He earned it; Ty is a really great widget maker. But him winning the award before I win one gives him an excuse to razz me, and, well, I've been looking for an excuse to get him back.

So today, out of nowhere I got a crazy idea. I wrote "MATT KELSEY" on a little piece of paper and I borrowed a piece of tape from a neighbor. When I noticed Ty wasn't sitting at his desk, I very casually walked over to his cube and taped my name over his on the customer service award.

Then I went back to my desk. I didn't point it out to him. When I walked back past his desk a couple hours later, it was still there. A couple hours after that, he acknowledged that he had noticed it.

But he didn't remove the label. Right now, my name is still on the award. That makes it mine, I think. And since I didn't actually earn it, I'd say that's an unexpected gain.

I also made a more productive gain today. Jamie drove me to work this morning, and this afternoon, when I called her to come pick me up, I knew I only had about twenty minutes before she would arrive. I didn't want to start any tasks that would take longer than twenty minutes, so I looked through my inventory for quick work that needed to be done. I found a bunch of stuff. I was productive as hell during those twenty minutes of the day, cranking out widgets left and right.

And Jamie was a little late, too, so I crammed even more quick tasks in.

A rushing period at the end of the day netted me an unexpected amount of production.
