Today's fortune: The only good is knowledge and the only evil ignorance.
Over the course of nearly 11 months (!), I don't think I've opened a fortune I loved more than this one. I have associated with people who believe that knowledge is evil, and the quest for knowledge equally so. Most of these people based their opinions on their religion, but not all of them.
I think it's a shame when people say they hate to read, or they hate to learn. What they're really saying is they don't care about bettering themselves; they're perfectly content where they are. And I guess as a theory that's okay, but what these folks don't realize is your brain takes maintenance. If you stop learning, you won't just stop growing, you'll actually regress and lose knowledge.
People who don't like to read and people who are ignorant are not evil. But ignorant people are more likely to succumb to evil, I believe.
I was saddened today when I saw a news story about a former schoolmate of mine who is wanted for a very serious and unforgivable crime. I didn't know this person very well, but what I remember about him is that he was shy, socially awkward and a perhaps a little slow. Now he is accused of doing something truly evil, and I can't help but think his actions are the result of ignorance - his own ignorance, the ignorance of those closest to him, the ignorance of society, or maybe all three. I don't know.
hell, most people have not only associated with people who thought knowledge was evil, they were raised by them.
