Today's fortune: A thrilling time is in your immediate future.
Ain't that the truth.
We're throwing a family baby shower for my brother and sister-in-law this weekend, and the whole famn damily is in town to celebrate. A thrilling time is to be had for sure. Currently we're all camped out in the water park area of a local hotel.
There's my parents, who are watching the festivities with great joy, especially knowing the event is in celebration of their pending grandchild. Uncle Ralph and Aunt Kathy are here, as well as their kids, Jason and Adam and their significant others, and their kids. The guests of honor, brother Marty and sister-in-law Sarah are here too. About a dozen other relatives are coming in town later tonight and tomorrow as well.
I always have a great time with this side of the family. They're fun-loving people, and some of the best memories of my life are filled with their presence.
A quick story. My wedding eight years ago was, of course, a family affair, and all of my closest relatives were present at the rehearsal dinner the night before. A part of the wedding and rehearsal dinner were set aside to honor Jamie's Jewish heritage, and as such, a large loaf of delicious challah bread was each table at the rehearsal dinner.
Dinner took a little bit longer to serve than we expected, but finally it was served. Before the meal, we said a blessing, and then the rabbi stood before those gathered to bless the challah bread.
A glance at the table where most of my family was sitting revealed that their entire loaf of bread was gone, devoured in the minutes prior to the blessing.
I was most impressed with their ability to hold in their laughter until after the meal.
Yeah, this weekend will definitely be a thrilling time.
