Today's fortune: January 31, 2011

Today's fortune: A cheerful letter or message is on its way to you.

I decided to take the passive approach to this fortune today. Because really, how pathetic would it be if I asked people to send me a cheerful letter?

So far, though, the results have been sparse. I did receive a nice comment here on the blog from an anonymous reader:

"I'm loving your blog and your positive attitude!" Anon wrote. "I hope this is one of many cheerful messages you receive today."

Nope. It was the only one.

You know, in hindsight, maybe there is a way to be proactive about this fortune without begging for compliments.

I'm going to steal an idea from a guy here, and really I don't mind, because I'm pretty sure he time-traveled to the future to steal this one-thing-a-day-for-a-year idea from me (just kidding).

Jamie saw this on the news over the weekend: A man by the name of John Kralik wrote a book called "365 Thank Yous" after he sent out a thank you letter every day for a year. Here's a description of his project, from the book's website:

[John] set himself a goal—come what may—of writing 365 thank-you notes in the coming year.
One by one, day after day, he began to handwrite thank yous—for gifts or kindnesses he’d received from loved ones and coworkers, from past business associates and current foes, from college friends and doctors and store clerks and handymen and neighbors, and anyone, really, absolutely anyone, who’d done him a good turn, however large or small.

What Kralik discovered was that the thank you notes begot blessings in his own life. And I'm sure John received many thank you notes in return.

So what's the best way to receive a cheerful letter or message? Send one.

Thanks for the idea, John. I'm going to take your advice and see what happens.

Oh, and can I borrow your time machine?
